Information
Lavaud is an 18th century farmhouse, recently restored to a high
standard by English and French craftsmen. In an outstanding setting,
close to the river Isle, surrounded by wooded hillsides and open
meadows, the house offers rural tranquility without isolation, rustic
charm blended with modern comforts. The surrounding area offers a
wealth of holiday activities.
Access:
Lavaud is situated ten minutes drive East of the main N21 trunk
road, approximately half way between Perigueux and Limoges. In the
North Eastern corner of the Dordogne department, the property is
also within easy reach of the department of Haute Vienne. The nearest
town of which, St. Yriex la Perche, has a surprisingly different
atmosphere, bringing home the fact that we have crossed the border
into another department.

The surrounding area:
Lavaud sits perched on its own verdant hillside overlooking valleys
to The East and West, with views stretching away across rolling,
wooded countryside. In the valley to the East is the river Isle
which has its source not very far away, and eventually runs in to
the sea near Bordeaux, after mingling with the Dordogne and Garronne
rivers.
The valley to the West is home to the river Vallouse which is
really more of a stream and reaches its confluence with the Isle
a little further downstream. Farmland belonging to Lavaud reaches
to the banks of both rivers, making for carefree and easily reached
swimming, fishing , and picnicking.
Shopping:
The nearest shops to Lavaud are at Jumilhac le Grand which provide
the basics: a bakery, a small grocery, a couple of bars, and a restaurant.
There is also a small branch of the Credit Agricole bank. A country
produce market is held every Sunday during the summer.
The
nearest "town" to Lavaud is Thiviers. Thiviers is a real
market town which, on Saturday mornings throughout the year is completely
taken over by the hustle and bustle of market stalls selling everything
from Chinese food to live chickens, and Oysters to overalls! Local
farmers flock from miles around to sell their fruit, vegetables,
and meat produce at what for them is the highlight of their social
calendar.
Built on a hill and dominating the surrounding countryside, Thiviers
boasts three supermarkets, at least four bakers, butchers, florists,
a main post office, several banks and the nearest hole in the wall
cash dispensers, which accept most UK cards.
For Hypermarkets, sports shops, gifts, and clothes shopping, Perigueux
and Limoges are both easily accessible.
Perigueux - regional, cultural, and gastronomic capital of the
Dordogne, has a wealth of shopping possibilities to satisfy most
tastes, ranging from clothes boutiques to provincial department
stores.
For the real hardened shoppers who are less easily satisfied, Bordeaux
is a must and only two and a half hours drive away thanks to the
new A89 Autoroute.
Market days:
Thiviers: Saturday morning. St.
Yriex la Perche, Brantome, and Riberac : Friday morning.
Perigueux: Saturday and Wednesday, and a small
fresh produce market is held every morning.
Eating out:
If you enjoy eating out then you couldn't choose
a better region for your holiday . The Perigord is world renowned
for its cuisine and fresh produce including Foie gras, truffles,
walnuts, and of course the wine! Where do we begin ?
The
region abounds with good quality restaurants. Nearest to Lavaud
is the Auberge du Combier. A few minutes down the road at Chez Eric
in the village of Sarrazac, you will literally rub shoulders with
the locals. The place is always packed at lunchtime, and with a
fixed menu which combines quality with quantity ( and usually has
an alternative to the main course ) you wont feel like eating for
a long time afterwards !
Slightly further afield at Jumilhac, and highly recommended, is
Lou Boueiradour good local cooking with a terrace on the village
square overlooking the Chateau.
Thiviers has several restaurants to choose from, l'Oceane is well
worth a try.
Five minutes drive beyond Thiviers towards Perigueux, is the village
of Sorges. On the roadside is a sign which boldly states "The
Perigord is the truffle capital of the world". A little further
on a second sign declares " Sorges is the truffle capital of
the Perigord ". It is here at Sorges that you will find a truffle
museum, country walks dedicated to truffle hunting, and best of
all the Auberge de la Truffe ! This restaurant is a real gastronomic
treat, highly praised by all the top guides .Whether you try the
truffles or not you will be spoilt rotten, and it wont cost a fortune,
but do book in advance.
Another
restaurant offering more than you can eat, with quality to match
is the Hotel de Paris in St. Pardoux la Riviere, in the direction
of Nontron. Especially good for Sunday lunch.
Perigueux has a wide diversity of restaurants. Probably the most
obvious recommendation to make is the Taverne de Maitre Kanter,
easy to find and with a warm welcome. You don’t have to like
Sauerkraut, but it helps ! The narrow streets of old Perigueux are
well worth exploring for their wide choice of small cosy restaurants,
and new ones seem to pop up every year. If by chance you fancy a
curry, call in and see Irfan, the English speaking owner of the
Maharaja.
Nights out:
Being a rural region, nightlife here does tend to revolve around
eating out, but a great effort is made to entertain visitors during
the summer. Several towns in the area offer Son et lumiere shows,
combining fireworks, lighting, and music. Thiviers holds an annual
night market complete with outdoor restaurant. Almost every weekend
one village or another will be holding its annual féte, inevitably
climaxing in a spectacular firework display.
Bars and cafes can be found everywhere, and most towns have at
least one nightclub, usually situated on the outskirts of town.
The nearest disco to Lavaud is the Dolce vita at St. Yriex la Perche.
In Perigueux the Café de Paris has a laid back atmosphere,
and The Star Inn is a popular meeting place for the local UK expats.
Days out:
It
is hard to travel any distance in this region without encountering
a magnificent Chateau rising out of the countryside. Most are open
to the public, particularly during the summer months.
On our doorstep, and one of the most beautifull, the chateau at
Jumilhac has a fascinating history and is well worth a visit. Your
time will also be well rewarded by a trip to Bourdeilles, perched
on its cliff and dwarfing the village below with its towering donjon.
Puyguilhem at Villars, Hautefort, Mareuil, and Les Bories at Antonne,
are all nearby. Further afield are the Chateaux of the Dordogne
valley.
Just
a few examples of other interesting visits are : Brantome, "the
Venice of the Perigord " and its abbey. Bourdeilles, a charming
village as well as an imposing chateau, St. Jean de Cole, one of
the "most beautifull villages of France" especially during
the floralies in May. Limoges and St. Yriex for Porcelaine, Le Bugue
for caves, its aquarium and medieval village, Les Eyzies, caves
and pre-history museum, and the Dordogne valley for canoeing, caves,
chateaux, and spectacular scenery.
A full selection of guide books, maps, and brochures are available
for your use at Lavaud.
Sports and Leisure:
Tennis:
Lavaud has its own full size tennis court. There are also tennis
courts at Thiviers, and at St. Yriex a tennis complex with indoor
as well as outdoor courts, and a clubhouse. Instruction is available
as well as equipment hire.
Fishing:
Fishing is possible in the river Isle and the Vallouse, and in the
many lakes and rivers in the area. A permit can be obtained from
a Tabac.
Canoeing:
The regions rivers are ideal for canoeing and access is easy with
your own canoe. At Brantome several businesses offer canoe hire
on regularly used stretches of the Dronne. Safe and suitable for
all the family, life jackets and equipment are provided.
Horse riding :
Although the caretakers of Lavaud have horses on site,
they are not generally available for riding. However there is an
excellent riding centre at St. Yriex which offers all of the usual
services to a good standard, and stages regular competitions.
Golf :
An 18 hole golf course, open to the public is available at Perigueux.
